St Paul’s College is making good progress on the implementation of its new development plans which include the expansion and enhancement of the existing College and the establishment of a new Graduate House for postgraduate students and academics.
In December 2015 the College Council approved expenditure for the commencement of the first stage of building works for the construction of a new building incorporating 130 rooms. Work has now commenced and completion of this building is expected in 2017. The College is planning to commence the second stage for up to 200 rooms during 2017.
This represents a significant step towards the College becoming an internationally recognised place of rigorous intellectual, moral and spiritual engagement at the heart of the University of Sydney: a place where students, academic staff and visitors, reflecting the full spectrum of university life, can interact, grow and learn from one another in a mutually supportive residential environment.
The College continues to receive expert advice on the project from Citta Property Group and Cox Architecture and has the ongoing support of the University, which proposes to lease space in the new buildings below the level of the College Oval. The revenue from these leases will help underpin financing of the expansion plans.
Council remains committed to preserving all the best of St Paul’s College as it currently exists as a College predominantly for male undergraduates, while establishing a separate and distinctive Graduate House for men and women undertaking higher degrees and for academic staff and visitors.
As part of the College’s commitment to realising this potential, the Council is delighted to announce the appointment of Mr Geoff Lovell to the new role of Vice Warden of the College. Geoff has a long-standing connection with the College, having been a Foundation Scholar, Fellow and Chairman of Council. Most importantly Geoff has extensive professional experience relevant to the role he will provide as Vice Warden in implementing the College’s expansion plans on behalf of Council. Geoff will also oversee the Advancement Office, for which Mrs Kim Sanchez commenced as the Director of Advancement in August 2015, and in due course the general operations of the College. To learn more about Geoff, see his full bio on our website.
There will be many opportunities to support the College as it undertakes its new development plans. The College looks forward to providing regular updates on the project as it develops and on other activities in the life of the College.
