In the traditional way College provided a Valedictory Chapel Service based on the Festival of Lessons and Carols for Advent on 28 November, at the end of the final week of Semester 2 Exams. The readers were Claudio Garcia Ramirez (MPublic Pol) who has completed his term as the 2025 Middle Prefect, Brianna Morrison the retiring Associate Dean of Graduate House, Isla Joyce (MN) the newly elected Middle Prefect for 2026, Dr Antone Martinho-Truswell, the founding Dean of Graduate House. The preacher was the Warden and the service was supported by members of the College Chapel Choir and College Organists and Composer-in-Residence David Drury and Organ Scholar Bailey Yeates.

- [Middle Common Room Election](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/middle-common-room-election/): The postgraduate students’ organisation is the Middle Common Room which began as a student representative body in 2019 and has been responsible for numerous student-led events and initiatives since that time. These include the annual Graduate House Ball—being held this year on 24 October—friendly sports competitions for The Saints’ Cup, purchases of art works for the College Collection, the wine cellar, and many diverse cultural activity days.  
- [Rawson Athletics Win](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/rawson-athletics-win/): On 15 October the Intercol Athletics Carnival was held at Sydney Olympic Park and provided an exciting night of track and field events for the Rosebowl and the Rawson Cup competitions. In the women’s track events St Paul’s found four 2nd places and 2nd in the 4 x 400m relay and a win in the 4 x 100m relay. The field events were more exciting with wins by Hannah Ferguson in high jump, Lola Cayzer and Milana Henderson in triple jump heats, and Milana again winning long jump.

Richard completed his studies at The University of Sydney: BSc in 1980, DipEd in 1980 and a PhD in 1987, and was at St Paul’s 1977-79. He is the Founding Director of the Centre for Ecosystem Science (formerly Australian Wetlands, Rivers and Landscapes Centre), School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Science, since 2009 at UNSW where since 2005 he has been a professor.

Back-to-back wins by the team in only the third year of women undergraduates at Paul's is a testament to the St Paul's spirit of commitment, tenacity and team building. 
- [Baptism and Confirmation Service](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/baptism-and-confirmation-service/): On Tuesday 27 May 2025, a Service of Baptism and Confirmation was the College's final Chapel service of Semester 1. During the service Auryn Griffiths was baptised by the Chaplain and Auryn, Hunter Hyde and Rory Lambert, were Confirmed by the Bishop of South Sydney, the Rt Rev. Dr Michael Stead.  Baptism is an outward sign of the inward transformation that comes through turning to Christ and putting one's faith in him, that moment when a person publicly declares his or her faith and discipleship. Baptism is with water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and the candidate proclaims the heart of the Gospel: that Jesus died for their sins, was buried, and rose again, identifying themselves with Jesus as Lord and Saviour. Confirmation is for those already baptised who wish to make a mature and public affirmation of their faith in Jesus Christ. It is also the moment when the Church formally recognises and confirms their membership within the Body of Christ.

The day is very important in the College calendar and for students to remember the sacrifices made in war. 47 Paulines laid down their lives in battle and are commemorated on the memorial wall of the College Chapel. The address by Rev'd Dave Schweinsberg, the senior Defence Force Chaplain - Sydney, was a powerful reflection on the devastation of war and its personal impact, the struggle for peace through military service, and the Christian ethos of love.

The Rosebowl Rowing Team have retained the cup in a race dominated by the St Paul’s Crew in the last 100m on 9 April at the Sydney International Regatta Centre, Penrith. The team of Harry Scambler (coach), Greta Bourne (coach), Bow: Grace Merrilees, 2: Ella Ramsay, 3: Grace Anderson, 4: Anya Koturanova, 5: Grace Charge, 6: Libby Carey, 7: Jaime Lock, Stroke: Frankie Richards, and Cox: Bridget Pye went stroke for stroke against a powerful St Andrew’s crew beating them by 3.7 seconds with a time of 7:15.1.

- [Intercol Swimming](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/intercol-swimming/): The Rosebowl Swimming was convened by Alice Radford and Anoushka Cayzer and after a thrilling carnival at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre St Paul's Rosebowl Swimming team came in 3rd overall. Congratulations to Lola Cayzer who came 2nd overall in the diving, Victoria de Costobardie 2nd in 400m freestyle and Matilda Wittenoom 2nd in 50m breaststroke. Point scores were: Women's on 360; St Andrew's on 293; St Paul's on 256; Sancta on 234; Wesley on 223; and St John's on 191.

With over 330 undergraduates two nights are needed across the dining hall and JCR to accommodate the demand for this very happy event. The College is in indebted to the Holmes à Court family and Vasse Felix and the Toll Family for their generous support of the event.
- [John Gaden at the Seymour Centre](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/john-gaden-at-the-seymour-centre/): John Gaden AO is one of the country's leading actors who cut his teeth as a member of Mummers when he was at Paul's 1959-61. He has been on stage and screen for the last 60 years and at 83 is performing with the Sport for Jove Theatre Company at the Seymour Centre this March-April in The Player Kings. This is a new adaptation of Shakespeare's Richard II, Henry IV Part 1, Henry IV Part 2, Henry V, Henry VI Part 1, Henry VI Part 2, Henry VI Part 3, and Richard III by Damien Ryan Founder and director of the company. The Player Kings is staged over two epic performances during the season from 26 March to 5 April 2025.
- [Rosebowl Campaign Begins](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/rosebowl-campaign-begins/): Netball began the Rosebowl 2025 campaign with Women's just edging out St Andrew's by the close of the competition. The St Paul's team worked hard and won in Round 1 against Wesley and Round 4 against Sancta. They only lost to the ultimate winners, Women's, by 2 points after nail-biting game in Round 3. Strong play from St Andrew's in Round 2 and St John's in Round 5 produced the final result of St Paul's in 4th place and gaining 3 Rosebowl points.

The team played a scheduled pre-comp game on 27 February on the College Oval against I Zingari Australia. This is an annual match and helps our cricketers prepare for the Rawson Cup campaign. The College is very appreciative to have one of the premier cricket clubs in the country, founded in 1888, on our wicket for this early-season game.

- [Chief Justice Opens the 2025 Judicial Year](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/chief-justice-opens-the-2025-judicial-year/): Pauline, The Hon Andrew Bell, the Chief Justice of NSW, gave his Opening of Law Term address on 6 February and made news headlines with his remarks on a number of current issues. Law students at Paul’s in 2025 would do well to reflect on the matters His Honour has raised, particularly for those shortly to embark on their practical legal training. Andrew states that the costs for this graduate diploma, essential to be admitted into law practice in NSW, “may well present a significant barrier to entry to the legal profession”. He has been able to address some of the issues with the College of Law in Sydney and is about to launch an independent survey through the Legal Professional Admission Board.  
- [Choir Excels in London](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/choir-excels-in-london/): Expectations about a visiting Australian choir in London were well and truly exceeded when St Paul’s College Chapel Choir sang their first notes in St Paul’s Cathedral London on 28 December 2024. 48 choir members and supporters undertook an international tour over the 2024 Christmas-2025 New Year season to London, Canterbury, York and Paris.

- [Gift of Recent Portrait of Pauline](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/gift-of-recent-portrait-of-pauline/): Michael Lodge, at College 1961-62, brought his old friend Prof Garth Nicholson, at College 1961-66, back to College to finalise an agreement for Michael’s portrait of Garth to be given to the College. After studying architecture Michael has been a life-long artist with work as an illustrator for the Canberra Times, The Bulletin and the Australian and more generally in advertising and publishing.
- [New Public Art for the College](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/new-public-art-for-the-college/): In memory of Zac Lerner (2003-24) who died peacefully in his sleep at College on 16 March 2024, his family has donated to the College a new major work of outdoor contemporary art by David McCracken, a sculptor based in Auckland. According to McCracken Carlyle and Kurzweil, chasing chasing was a slightly flippant choice of name initially, but turned out to be particularly appropriate. This is his fourth work in a series of circular works, hand-made in steel employing symmetry and “a slightly baroque machine aesthetic” (McCracken), giving a nod to the life Zac led—from Tennis Convener to musician to Paul’s Formal committee to his afro.

- [Remembrance Day](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/remembrance-day/): On 11 November 2024 the College pauses for a commemoration service in the Chapel at 10.30 am and at 11.00 there will be silence in remembrance of those who have given their lives in battle. The form of service is the one used on the very first commemoration of the Armistice on Sunday 17th November 1918.
- [St Paul’s becomes São Paulo](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/st-pauls-becomes-sao-paulo/): The Paul's Formal, held on Friday 11 October continued its tradition of being one of the most creative of the Sydney University colleges’ end of year parties. This year, perhaps, the most colourful ever was a journey taking you somewhere, even anywhere, in Brazil. The 750 lucky ticket holders were not to be disappointed as they explored the amazing staging and props for Ipanema Beach in Rio, through the Amazonian Rainforest to São Paulo (oh yes, St Paul!) and back to Rio with its colourful markets in the favelas.

- [Another Mummers Triumph](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/another-mummers-triumph/): For their second play in 2024 and second in the Waddy Theatre the undergraduate theatrical company, St Paul’s College Mummers, presented one of the largest productions seen in many years over three shows on 25, 26 and 27 October. No less than fifteen cast members were needed to present a re-write of all 37 of William Shakespear’s plays. “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) {Revised Again} and Rewritten” by Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield was directed by Ryan Bond assisted by Freya Carmody, William Nicholas and Max Philips.
- [Victoriana! 60 – the Best Yet!](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/victoriana-60-the-best-yet/): “A splendorous, sparkling night” was a guest’s comment after seeing the 60th production of Victoriana in October. Delighting a full house on each of 27, 28 September, 4 and 5 October the ‘good old numbers’ just ‘popped’ under the solid control of 16 talented residents of the College who were supported by a handful of alumni and professional musicians. The old favourite songs were sprinkled with some refreshing new Victorian songs about food and childhood rivalry.
- [Jacarandas in Full Bloom](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/jacarandas-in-full-bloom/): Jacaranda Week is a hallowed tradition of St Paul's College, this is the week before Stuvac and it always coincides with the blast of lavender blossoms all over Sydney. Jacaranda trees in the College grounds are looking amazing this week and our students are studying hard and rapidly finishing assignments. The tradition is that you must be already preparing for exams when the blossoms appear!

The celebrations began at a very full Valedictory Chapel Service with its rousing ‘bangers’ of hymns, all chosen by the Students’ Club Committee. Thank you to the Warden for a stirring sermon about spiritual rebirth and coping with change using the second reading from St John’s Gospel (3 1-15) about Nicodemus and the parable Jesus told of Moses and the bronze serpent.

- [St Paul’s College Mummers Prepare for Semester 2 Performances](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/st-pauls-college-mummers-prepare-for-semester-2-performances/): With 430 resident Paulines the College boasts two theatrical troupes: Mummers, founded in 1948 by the then Warden Felix Arnott, and The Impresario Players, founded in 2018 by Graduate House Dean Antone Martinho-Truswell.
- [Academic Success Acknowledged at Graduate House](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/academic-success-acknowledged-at-graduate-house/): Academic achievement among members of Graduate House is an important part of the celebrations during the cycle of the academic year. We have recently farewelled several Doctor of Medicine Year IV students whose coursework finished at Mid-Semester break. All of these budding young doctors head off to their first full-time internships at hospitals around the state in the coming weeks or after a short well-earned break. Other coursework higher degrees finish at the end of the semester but those doing masters degrees or doctorates by thesis are finishing gradually with thesis submission, and then emendations and resubmission.

Established in 2018 the Middle Common Room (or MCR) also hold regular general meetings and at the AGM the community elects its executive committee for the year ahead. The senior student is the Middle Prefect who is the chair of the executive.

- [Our History](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/our-history/): St Paul’s College is the oldest residential college in Australia within Australia’s first university, The University of Sydney. The College was founded as a separate Anglican institution on land secured from the University and the church by a committee chaired by Sir Alfred Stephen, Chief Justice of NSW. He drew up the legislation that was to become the 1854 Act of NSW Parliament which was only succeeded by a new Act in 2018. The foundation stone was laid on the grounds by the then NSW Governor, Sir William Denison, on the Feast of the Conversion of St Paul, 25 January 1856.

Paired with choral and ensemble works by Ola Gjeilo and Eric Whitacre performed with the St Paul’s College Choir, this exciting concert will be presented in the gothic sandstone Dining Hall of St Paul’s College.

## Staffs
- [Ed Loane](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/staff/revd-dr-edward-loane/): Reverend Dr Ed Loane BSc(Syd) BD(Hons) DipMin(MTC) PhD(Cantab) commenced as Warden of St Paul’s College in January 2020. As the Head of College, the Warden is responsible for the daily management of the College operations. He oversees the student and academic life, operations, media and governance matters, finances, philanthropy and hospitality.
- [Dieni Powell](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/staff/ms-dieni-powell/): Ms Dieni Powell BA (Adel), MTeach (Melb) serves as Vice-Warden of St Paul’s College. In this role, she deputises for the Warden and has particular responsibility for the leadership, oversight and pastoral care of the residential life of the College. She works closely with the Dean of Undergraduates, Dean of Graduates, Academic Dean, Chaplain and Senior Tutor to support a respectful, safe and flourishing academic community. As a new member of the community, she is an active and approachable presence in College life and is deeply engaged in the daily rhythms of the community.

- [Antony Weiss](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/staff/antony-weiss/): Rev’d Antony Weiss BD(MTC) BA(UNSW) GradDipEd(UTS) was appointed as the resident Chaplain to St Paul’s College in 2018. Antony has a Bachelor of Divinity from Moore Theological College and was made Deacon and ordained Priest in the Diocese of Sydney. In addition to his full-time licensed ministry at St Paul’s College, Antony also holds the Archbishop of Sydney’s licence as an Honorary Assistant Priest at Christ Church St Laurence at Railway Square.

- [Tracey Donkin](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/staff/tracey-donkin/): Tracey Donkin joined the St Paul’s College team in early 2019 after working within the independent school sector as a Registrar for 14 years. Tracey is the first point of contact for all incoming enquiries regarding applications as either a prospective undergraduate or postgraduate resident. Tracey enjoys working alongside future Paulines as they progress throughout the application process until the time of their College commencement. Whether prospective students are looking to tour the College campus, attend a School’s Dinner or a College Open Day, Tracey is the port of call.

- [Philip Barr](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/staff/philip-barr/): Philip Barr BA DipEd(Syd) is a member of the Admissions team of the College whose principal responsibility is interviewing candidates for admission to the undergraduate College. Philip is an alumnus of St Paul’s (1973-1976) and in his final year served as Honorary Secretary of the Students’ Club and Director of Mummers.
- [Andrew Watt](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/staff/andrew-watt/): Andrew Watt MEdLdr(Macq) BEd(Woll) is welcomed to the Admissions Team while Philip Barr is on secondment. Andrew was Principal of Emanuel School 2018-24. Previously he held roles as Deputy Head of Wenona School and Deputy Head of Scots College Sydney.
- [Andrew Sinclair](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/staff/mr-a-i-sinclair/): Mr Andrew Sinclair BE(Syd) is the current Bursar of the College and has been on Council since 2013. He is a Director of Giant Capital Management Limited, an energy investment firm operating principally in the United States. He is also a Director of Longreach Energy Holdings alongside numerous subsidiaries and affiliates of those firms.
- [Richard Morgan](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/staff/richard-morgan/): Richard Morgan MA GDipMuseumStud(Syd) DipOutdoorRec(AQTF) FRSA MFIA MAICD JP joined the staff in April 2017, within which he is responsible for the administration of the College’s fundraising program and engagement with Paulines of all generations. A Fresher in 1978, Richard has given much of his time to assisting the St Paul’s College Union across various roles since he was an undergraduate. His role since 2023 is Director of Community Engagement with responsibility for alumni and community communications, website, social media, newsletters, events and College history.
- [Sarah Siegloff](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/staff/sarah-siegloff/): Sarah Siegloff is the Manager of Major Gifts. Sarah joined the St Paul’s College Community Advancement Team in 2023, working with Richard Morgan and Julie Lam, to engage with the St Paul’s College community and support its goals into the future. Sarah is focused on major gifts and planned giving.
- [Jackie Cox](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/staff/jackie-cox/): Jackie Cox BAcct(SCU) FCPA JP commenced with St Paul’s in late 2017 and is the Director of Finance and Operations at St Paul’s College, responsible for its operational, financial and commercial management. She also serves as Secretary to the College Council and is responsible for the Groups and Conferencing business. Jackie is a Fellow Certified Practising Accountant (FCPA), bringing over two decades of experience in the accommodation, hospitality and travel sectors to St Paul’s and is a Justice of the Peace (JP). In her spare time, Jackie is an avid photographer.
- [Amanda O’Yang](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/staff/amanda-oyang/): Amanda O'Yang is the warm, smiling face behind the College’s reception, welcoming all undergraduate, postgraduate and senior members into the St Paul’s residential community. Amanda works hard to make all residents feel comfortable in their ‘home away from home’. She embraces the unique college spirit that ensures each resident has the best possible collegiate experience.
- [Brad Skone](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/staff/brad-skone/): Brad Skone is a cabinet maker by trade, and Brad was a part of the St Paul’s College maintenance team for over a decade, making his promotion to Facilities Manager a seamless transition. Brad enjoys meeting a variety of characters and personality types as he works across the St Paul’s campus. Every day poses a new challenge, with two days rarely the same as each other. A keen sportsman in his day, Brad is passionate about the sporting aspects of College life, and is a proud supporter of the Canberra Raiders.

- [Mark Elliott](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/staff/mr-m-r-elliott/): Mark Elliott BE(Civil)(Syd) joined the St Paul’s College Council in 2016 and became Chair in 2017. He is a member of the Finance Committee and a Director of SPCGH, the entity which developed and owns the Ivan Head and McMillan buildings.
- [Max Wood](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/staff/revd-dr-m-wood/): The Reverend Dr Max Wood BA LLB(Macq) BTheol(Hons)(Charles Sturt) PhD(Durham) is a Clerical Fellow and Deputy Chair of the St Paul’s College Council, first taking the position of Clerical Fellow in 2015. Fr Max is also the Rector of St Luke’s, Mosman.
- [James Bell](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/staff/james-russell-godfrey-bell/): James Bell BA LLB(Syd) has been a Fellow since 1996. During his own studies, he read Arts with majors in Government and Music, as well as Law, during which time he was a resident of the College himself. He undertook many extracurricular roles, including Treasurer of the Students’ Club, Cellar Master, Editor of Pauline and Producer of Victoriana, so is very familiar with the day-to-day life of the St. Paul’s community.
- [Chrissy Biscoe](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/staff/dr-c-s-biscoe/): Dr Christine Biscoe BDS(Syd) FADI FPFA was first elected to Council in 2012. Christine is an alumna of the Women’s College and her two sons are Paulines. After graduating she worked in the RAN before entering private practice as a dentist. Christine has run her own dental practice for 32 years. In 2016 she was appointed to the NSW Dental Council.
- [Philip Bradford](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/staff/the-rev-philip-john-bradford/): Rev'd Philip Bradford MA(Syd) MTh has been a Clerical Fellow since 2012. After finishing the Leaving Certificate at James Ruse Agricultural High School, Philip enrolled in an Arts degree at the University of NSW, where he was awarded his B.A. in 1969. Philip then transferred to Sydney University, completing a Master’s degree in Psychology in 1970. During this study, Philip was employed as a resident tutor at New College. In 1971, Philip began work as a psychologist (in a role that would later be called an audiologist) with the National Acoustics Laboratory (NAL). In 1983, Philip felt called to ministry, enrolling as a student at Moore College and beginning a new vocation.
- [James Collins](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/staff/the-reverend-dr-james-anthony-collins/): Rev'd Dr James Collins OAM, DipTeach(Claremont TC) GradDipRelEd(CathPastInstWA) GradDipRelEdStud BEd(WACAE) BTheol(Murdoch) CPE(RPH) PostGradDipArts MA(ECowan) PhD(Tasm) has been a Clerical Fellow since 2015. James’ career commenced as a music teacher at primary and secondary levels at Christ Church Grammar School in Perth. After this experience, James studied theology whilst residing at St George’s College within the University of Western Australia. He was ordained a Deacon in 1987 and a Priest in 1988.
- [Matthew Gerber](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/staff/matthew-david-graeme-gerber/): Matthew Gerber BCom MIntStud(Syd) was first elected as a Fellow of Paul’s College in 2010, Matthew is also a two-time attendee of the College. He first attended as an undergraduate between 1993-1996 and then as a postgraduate in 2001. Matthew holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Honours) and a Master of International Studies (Merit) from the University of Sydney, as well as a Diploma of Investor Relations.
- [Ralph Goninan](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/staff/ralph-goninan/): Ralph Goninan BCom BE(Civil)(Syd) was a member of St Paul’s College from 2003-2006, culminating as the Senior Student in the College’s sesquicentenary year. During his time at the College, Ralph was an active participant in athletics and rugby, leading and organising the inaugural College Kokoda Trek. Ralph also held positions such as The Intercol Rep and Providore. Ralph joined the Council in March 2017. Ralph’s study of Civil Engineering and Commerce has led him to work primarily on large and complex infrastructure projects across both Australia and Hong Kong since 2006.
- [Julia Horne](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/staff/professor-julia-horne/): Professor Julia Horne PhD(UNSW) is a Professor of History and University Historian at the University of Sydney. In this role, Julia helps promote understanding of the university’s extensive and fascinating history and heritage, as well as contributing to the postgraduate teaching and supervision programs in the School of Humanities and the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
- [Kimberly Sawyer](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/staff/kimberly-sawyer/): The Rev'd Kimberly Sawyer is the Priest in Charge at St John's Anglican Church Cooks Hill in the Diocese of Newcastle.
- [David Roberts](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/staff/mr-david-edward-demestre-roberts/): David Roberts BEc LLB(Syd) was elected to the College Council in 2015 and serves on the Finance Committee. A resident of St. Paul’s himself from 1981-1984, David was Treasurer of the Students’ Club during his time as a Pauline.
- [Roberto Sgroi](https://www.stpauls.edu.au/staff/roberto-sgroi/): Roberto Sgroi began his career in hospitality in 2000, working in numerous iconic restaurants and hotels across Sydney. During his time at the Hilton Hotel, Roberto accomplished 4 years as an apprentice, steadily working his way up from this foundation. One of his greatest achievements was working as a junior sous alongside celebrity chef Sean Connolly at Astral Star City, an award-winning one-hatted restaurant. It was here where Roberto gained most of his knowledge of and respect for food.
