Details of Rugby Final - from Hamish King
Anticipation for the Rugby final against Wesley saturated Paul’s from the moment the first drops of rain hit the ageing rooves at the beginning of the week. As the puddles of water grew on the ground, our confidence, residing at first in preparedness, and finally in mateship, morphed to happiness, a happiness because we worked hard, a happiness because we were playing rugby together. Nowhere was this more obvious than in the front row: King, Riches, King. Working as a close knit unit they dominated, and were rewarded in the 15th minute when Henry King scored after a fantastic grinding effort by the whole forward pack. The result was never obvious, however, and the huge Paul’s crowd that braved the atrocious, even surreal, conditions were always enthralled: “the best game I’ve seen,” said the Warden. Our discipline sometimes gave Wesley opportunities to get back in the game, but they were unable to capitalise effectively, missing two penalty goal attempts. On the other hand our goal kicker, John Blake, had a flawless game with the boot, kicking two penalty goals and two conversions. The second conversion, a fantastic kick, came after John had scored in the corner. Final score: twenty to seven.
• Soccer: Congratulations to Wesley on winning Rawson soccer, with Andrew's in second place and Paul's third. • Tennis: Victory for the second consecutive year!
