Origins of the Rawson Cup

The men’s intercollegiate sporting competition at Sydney University evolved during the 1880s and ‘90s, beginning with contests between Paul’s and Andrew’s. Rowing was the first to be properly organised among all three colleges, from 1892. Duncan Forbes Mackay, a Pauline, donated a Tennis trophy in 1891, the heads of the three men’s colleges gave an Athletics trophy in 1899, in 1905 Venour Nathan, another Pauline, a recent veteran of the Boer War, gave a Shooting cup, and in 1906 a group of college rowing Blues and coaches donated a Rowing cup.

Then in 1906 the Governor of New South Wales, Admiral Sir Harry Rawson GCB, whose son was also at Paul’s, announced his intention to donate a Challenge Cup, using combined scores for Rugby, Cricket, Rowing, Athletics, Tennis and Shooting. This was to be the Rawson Cup.
